New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU), founded in 1941, serves the needs of almost 1,400 graduate students with degrees in business, education, forestry, humanities, natural sciences, exercise and sport sciences, public administration, socials sciences and the visual arts. Students at NMHU are predominantly from New Mexico, though the campus draws students from across the country and around the world. New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) is located in the heart of Las Vegas, a small, friendly town with a population of about 18,000. NMHUs' main campus is close to recreational and wilderness areas, and within a few hours of major metropolitan centers. Students have access to a wide variety of modern, specialized and well-equipped learning facilities. Students in natural and computer science programs get to experience the new Ivan Hilton Science Building, with its research, teaching and computer labs. Students in Psychology and Southwest Studies have access to the psychobiology lab and the Gabino Rendon Socio-cultural Research Center. Anthropology students also have the opportunity to participate in research at the anthropology lab and in the field.
Grad Student Organizations
The office of Campus Life at NMHU oversees several clubs and organizations that are established by students. Each club represents a unique interest, both educational and academic in nature. Every chartered club and organization is open to all students. Examples of particular relevance to graduate students include: Anthropology Club, ALS club, Association of Sociology, Bilingual Graduate Social Work Association, Exercise and Sports Science Club, Graduate Social Work Association, International Student Club, NMHU Black Student Association, NMHU Native American Club, Science Club, and the Society of American Foresters.
